When a pool light goes out, a lot of Chandler homeowners assume the worst. Often it's a straightforward fix. Here are a couple of safe things you can check yourself, followed by what we do when it's time for a specialist.
Safe things to check first
Check the switch and timer. It sounds obvious, but a timer that got bumped or reset after a power outage is a common reason a light seems dead.
Look at the GFCI and breaker. If the pool light circuit has tripped, you'll usually see it at the GFCI outlet or breaker panel. You can reset it once. If it trips again, stop there. Repeated tripping often means water has reached the fixture, and that is not something to keep resetting.
Look at the light from the deck. Fog, water, or a dark spot inside the lens tells us a lot. Snap a photo if you can.
Please don't open the fixture or handle wiring yourself. Water and electricity don't mix.
Where we come in
If none of that solves it, we take over. We work only on pool lights, so troubleshooting a fixture is routine for us. Once we know the cause, we'll recommend one of the following:
- A replacement of the bulb, lens, gasket, or full fixture, depending on what failed.
- An LED upgrade if you have an older light. It's often the better value, since LEDs use far less electricity and last much longer.
- A referral if the issue is outside our scope, such as circuit work that needs a licensed electrician. We'll tell you straight.
